Sensor & Camera Cutouts in Pre-Cut Templates
Sensor & Camera Cutouts in Pre-Cut Templates
AutoVectors designs sensor and camera cutouts with high precision, matching OEM locations accurately. However, real-world PPF installation requires stretching, contouring and repositioning, which often makes hand-cutting a better and more reliable method than using pre-cut holes.
1. Why We Often Recommend Not Plotting Sensor Holes
Even though cutouts are designed precisely, PPF material stretches during installation. Because of this, pre-cut holes rarely match the final stretched position perfectly — especially on curved bumpers. This is why most professional installers prefer to cut sensor openings by hand after installation.
Hand-cutting is:
- • Faster
- • Safer
- • More accurate
- • More consistent on different vehicle shapes
2. Rear Bumpers — Do Not Use Pre-Cut Sensor Holes
Rear bumpers require significant stretching and shaping during installation. Because of this, pre-cut sensor holes almost never line up correctly once the film is fully installed.
Our recommendation:
Do not plot sensor holes for rear bumpers. Hand-cutting after installation is always the cleaner and more accurate approach.
3. Why Pre-Cut Holes Are Still Included in Some Templates
The templates show correct OEM sensor placements, but these placements are based on a theoretical flat pattern. During stretching and shaping, the film naturally shifts. Knowing where the holes belong is useful — but using them in the plotter is not always practical.
In short: the cutouts are accurate, but the installation process is dynamic.
4. Hand-Cutting — The Professional Standard
Across the industry, hand-cutting sensor and camera openings is considered the preferred professional method. It ensures:
- • Perfect positioning after stretching
- • Clean and smooth edges
- • No misaligned or distorted openings
- • Faster workflow compared to aligning pre-cut holes
Using pre-cut holes is optional — but hand-cutting will almost always deliver a superior result.
